Capital Issuance - January 2025

The capital issuance statistics consist of non-government primary market issuance of bonds, commercial paper and equity, representing finance raised by UK resident entities.

Key points

  • Gross capital issuance by UK residents was £80.2 billion in January, compared to £34.1 billion in December and the previous six-month average of £58.9 billion (Chart 1).
  • The rise in gross capital issuance was primarily driven by commercial paper issuance, where issuance rose from £13.8 billon in December to £44.0 billion in January.
  • Net capital issuance by UK residents was £11.8 billion in January, compared to -£3.0 billion in December and the previous six-month average of -£1.0 billion (Chart 1).

Bond issuance

  • Gross bond issuance was £36.1 billion in January, compared to £19.6 billion in December and the previous six-month average of £26.1 billion (Chart 2).
  • Net bond issuance was £11.4 billion in January, compared to £2.0 billion in December and the previous six-month average of £3.3 billion (Chart 2).
  • The rise in net issuance was driven by increases in issuance of £12.5 billion and £3.0 billion by the MFI and OFC sectors respectively, partially offset by increases in repayments of £4.8 billion and £2.4 billion by the same sectors respectively.

Commercial paper issuance

  • Gross commercial paper issuance was £44.0 billion in January, compared to £13.8 billion in December and the previous six-month average of £32.3 billion (Chart 3).
  • Net commercial paper issuance was £4.0 billion in January, compared to -£2.3 billion in December and the previous six-month average of -£0.5 billion (Chart 3).
  • The increase in net issuance was driven by a rise in issuance of £27.1 billion by the MFI sector and £3.0 billion by the OFC sector.

Equity issuance

  • Gross equity issuance was £0.1 billion in January, compared to £0.7 billion in December and the previous six-month average of £0.5 billion (Chart 4).
  • Net equity issuance was -£3.6 billion in January, compared to -£2.7 billion in December and the previous six-month average of -£3.8 billion (Chart 4).
  • The fall in net issuance was driven by decreases in issuance of £0.3 billion by both the PNFC and OFC sectors respectively, combined with an increase in buybacks of £0.2 billion by the OFC sector.
