Which firms does the PRA regulate?

The Prudential Regulation Authority regulates around 1,300 banks, building societies, credit unions, insurers and major investment firms. You can see lists of these firms here.

The lists of banks, building societies, credit unions, and insurers we regulate are updated monthly. The list of investment firms is updated when changes are made. They are intended to be used as a guide only. We will reflect the status on future lists for those firms who have been affected by the UK withdrawal from the EU.

Please note that as of December 2024, the documents on this webpage previously published in PDF format will now be published in CSV format to enhance the overall usability and accessibility of the documents.

As of February 2025, historical data that was previously published on this webpage will now be accessible through the National Archives website. Only the most recent publications will be available on this page.

Starting June 2025, Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) data will be included in the Banks, Building Societies, and Designated Investment Firm lists. For more information see the Firm Data section

Investment firms we regulate

A PRA-designated investment is a firm that, broadly speaking, meets the following conditions:

  • It has, or has applied for, permission to deal in investments as principal
  • It has (or would have if it was authorised) a minimum capital of €730,000, or is broadly analogous to a European Economic Area (EEA) passporting firm or non-EEA firm
  • It qualifies under our criteria for designated investment firms.

Firms that appear on this list do not hold permission to take deposits. Deposit takers with similar business models to the firms in this list appear in the list of banks we regulate.

Investment firms that do not appear on either of these lists are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

The lists include Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) data, for more information see the Firm Data section

LEI derivation guidance

Terms in inverted commas (‘’) match GLEIF terminology.

For ‘legal entities’ incorporated in the UK, the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) of the ‘legal entity’ has been selected.

For ‘legal entities’ incorporated overseas operating through a UK ‘branch’, the LEI of the ‘head office’ has been selected.

Matches are only made to LEIs with a ‘status’ of ‘issued’, ‘lapsed’ (‘lapsed’ status indicates that the reference data associated with the LEI was not re-validated by the date of its last due renewal), ‘pending_transfer’ or ‘pending_archival’ (these statuses are used during the transitional period when an LEI is being moved from one issuer to another).
