About the programme

This is designed for undergraduates with a placement year built into their course.

  • location: London or Leeds offices (hybrid)
  • salary: London – £25,250/Leeds – £22,940, as well as our comprehensive benefits package

To apply, you must:

  • be studying any undergraduate degree that allows you to do a placement year (starting from next summer)
  • be expecting to get a 2.1; you must not already have a degree; there are specific degree requirements for the Economist stream.
  • have achieved 120 UCAS points from three A levels (or equivalent)
  • We have designed this programme to help talented people gain valuable work experience at the heart of the UK’s financial system. 

    First of all, we will introduce you to the different types of work we do. Then, you will work in a team, getting involved in our policy, research and operational work. You will also attend regular training and events with your fellow Industrial Placement colleagues.

    How you could develop

    If you are interested in this programme, we will ask you to choose from the following streams:

    Data

    If you are interested in coding or producing and analysing key economic and financial statistics that are published by the Bank of England, either as a data analyst or data scientist then this stream might be ideal for you.

    The skills you could develop include:

    • data analysis, coding and visualisation (eg Python, R, PowerBI, Excel)
    • understanding of data science tools and programming languages such as R and Python
    • economic and financial research
    • drafting briefing materials and internal notes
    • supporting project delivery and stakeholder engagement

    If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

      • Data Analytics Transformation
      • Financial Stability Strategy and Risk
      • Payments

    Economics

    If you are studying an economics or finance degree, then this stream might be ideal for you. You will have the opportunity to support projects that feed into policy discussions and processes, working with data, applying economic judgment, and developing analytical skills. 

    The skills you could develop include:

    • strong analytical and numerical ability
    • economic and financial research
    • attention to detail
    • clear written and verbal communication
    • familiarity with data tools (eg Excel, Python, R)

    If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

     

    • Monetary Analysis
    • Centre for Central Banking Studies
    • Markets

    If you apply to the Data or Economics stream, you will need to complete an online Excel test as part of the assessment centre.

    Supervision

    If you’re interested in solving problems that are intellectually stimulating and directly impact the Bank of England’s mission, then this stream might be ideal for you. You will gain an insight into regulatory frameworks and could be supervising financial institutions such as insurance companies, banks and building societies. This stream is open to students from all degree disciplines.

     

    The skills you could develop include:

    • analytical and problem-solving
    • the ability to process, interpret, and question large amounts of complex data
    • working collaboratively as part of a dedicated team
    • clear written and verbal communication

    If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

      • Authorisations, Regtech and International Supervision
      • UK Deposit Takers Supervision
      • Strategy, Risk and Operations

    Risk

    If you are curious about financial markets and interested in developing technical expertise in areas such as stress-testing or wider market risks, then this stream might be ideal for you.

     

    The skills you could develop include:

     

    • Understanding and applying valuation methods to real-world financial instruments
    • Opportunities to innovate and automate processes through coding in R and Python
    • Application of strong analytical and numerical skills to problem solving with financial data, and to valuation methodology improvements
    • Working collaboratively towards continuous improvement and professional development

    If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

     

    • Markets
    • Strategic Change and Operations
    • Supervisory Risk Specialists

    In addition to your salary you will be enrolled on to the Bank of England pension scheme.
