Opportunities for university students to gain practical experience at the UK's central bank

Penultimate-year Internship

This is designed for students in the penultimate year of their undergraduate degree course. It takes place over the summer before you start your final year.

  • applications are open and close on Monday 1 December 2025 at 12pm (midday)
  • length of contract: 10 weeks
  • start date: end of June 2026
  • location: London or Leeds offices (hybrid)
  • salary: London – £25,250 pro rata/Leeds – £22,940 pro rata

This programme could be right for you if you are:

  • keen to learn about what we do and gain practical experience
  • eager to gain a unique insight into the workings of the UK's central bank
  • looking to build your network and find out more about graduate opportunities at the Bank of England

To apply, you must:

  • be in your penultimate year of your undergraduate degree course
  • be expecting to get a 2.1 degree classification
  • have achieved 120 UCAS points from three A levels (or equivalent) 
  • We will assign you to a team, where you will work on a specific project closely with economists or analysts to collect and analyse data.

    You will learn more about our role in the economy and gain on-the-job skills. You will also have the opportunity to learn more by attending talks and networking events.

    When you apply, we will ask you about your areas of interest. Please note, this is just an expression of interest, you are not applying to a specific area.

    If you are accepted, we could allocate you to one of the following areas:

    • Payments
    • Markets
    • Financial Market Infrastructure
    • Financial Stability Strategy and Risk
    • Insurance Supervision
    • UK Deposit Takers Supervision

Postgraduate-year Internship

This is designed for students in the final year of their undergraduate degree course, or the first year of a two-year master's. It takes place over the summer before you start your master's, or go into the final year of your master's.

  • applications are open and close on Monday 1 December 2025 at 12pm (midday) 
  • length of contract: 10 weeks 
  • start date: end of June 2026
  • location: London or Leeds offices (hybrid)
  • salary: London – £25,500 pro rata/Leeds – £22,950 pro rata

This programme could be right for you if you are:

  • We will assign you to a team, where you will work on a specific project closely with economists or analysts to collect and analyse data.

Black Heritage Sponsored Internship

This is designed for students of Black heritage in the penultimate year of their undergraduate degree course. If successful, you will receive funding of at least £5,000 towards living costs for one year at university. We will also offer you a paid internship for 10 weeks.

This programme is a targeted initiative designed to address the underrepresentation of people of Black heritage in our applicant pool and broaden access, particularly for students from minority ethnic and lower socio-economic backgrounds. This programme complements our wider internship offering, which is open to students from all backgrounds.

This programme could be right for you if you are:

  • keen to learn about what we do and gain practical experience
  • eager to gain a unique insight into the workings of the UK's central bank
  • looking to build your network and find out more about graduate opportunities

To apply, you must:

  • be in your penultimate year of your undergraduate degree course
  • be expecting a 2.1 degree classification
  • be of Black/mixed Black heritage background
  • have a household income of less than £50,778 a year
  • We will assign you to a team, where you will work on a specific project closely with economists or analysts to collect and analyse data.

    You will learn more about our role in the economy and gain on-the-job skills. You will also have the opportunity to learn more by attending talks and networking events.
