This December, join us for ‘The Austen Ball’, an evening of glamour and pageantry inspired by the world of Jane Austen.

Marking 250 years since Austen’s birth - one of Britain’s most celebrated novelists and the face of the current £10 banknote - this event transforms the historic Stock Office into a setting worthy of a grand ball. Experience the Bank’s opulent architecture in a whole new light.

Enjoy themed activities that pay tribute to Austen’s era, including a free historical dance workshop and silhouette portrait-making.

Whether you're an Austen devotee or simply curious to experience the past in style, The Austen Ball promises an evening of elegance, history, and celebration.

About the Georgettes of Oxford

  • The Georgettes of Oxford are a vibrant society dedicated to celebrating the elegance and charm of the Georgian and Regency eras. Based in Oxford and featured on both the BBC and Channel 5, the Georgettes offer historical dance classes that revive traditional steps while embracing modern interpretations, including choreography inspired by contemporary film adaptations.
  • In homage to the Regency period, classes are conducted in authentic historical dress, adding a rich visual and immersive dimension to the experience.
  • Beyond dance, the society runs a dynamic events programme featuring talks on Georgian themes and topics. Members also enjoy regular socials - some in costume, others more informal - fostering a welcoming community for enthusiasts of all levels.

Essential information about the event

  • The event and all its activities are completely free, but booking is required.
  • The event will begin at 5.15pm. The Museum will close temporarily at 5pm for security reasons, and reopen 15 minutes later.
  • Last entry is at 7.30pm. The event concludes at 8pm.
  • Please note there is airport-style security at the Museum’s entrance.
