[a] On 1 August 2006, the Bank ceased using 'Notes in Banking Department' in the Issue Department balance sheet as a balancing item to ensure that the total liabilities of Issue Department were rounded-up to the nearest £10 million. Consequently, the total liabilities of Issue Department are now equal to 'Notes in circulation', which are notes that have been issued and paid for. The entry for `Notes in Banking Department' does not reflect the value of physical notes held on Bank premises.
