[a] From December 1995 to August 1997, subsidiaries set up to take deposits in the Channel Islands & Isle of Man were classified as "building societies"; their balance sheets were consolidated with those of their parents and included in these data. From Sept 1997 the Channel Islands & Isle of Man were reclassified as non-residents, the balance sheets of these subsidiaries have been deconsolidated from those of their parents and are excluded from these data.
